Adventures in Food Trucks: Tasty Tuesdays in the Milk District
Awesomely delicious food magic on wheels. That's my personal definition of food trucks that Webster's Dictionary refuses to utilize. Many food trucks are unique in their culinary offerings with crazy, innovative menu options while others stick to the comfort food basics - which is totally tasty and okay by me. When a group of food trucks gather together in one place - it's a dream come true!
My dreams came true last night at Tasty Tuesdays in the Milk District of Orlando (east of the downtown area, if you aren't familiar!) The trucks rally in the back lot of a shopping strip with open doors to a few local bars (Spacebar, The Milk Bar, Etoile Boutique and Sportstown) that you can casually visit with your food truck findings - and grab a cold one while you're at it - heaven! Each week the venue hosts 10-12 rotating food trucks (pun-intended) offering a variety of tasty cuisines even the pickiest of visitors will enjoy! A treat for all.
Last night's line up included OverRice FoodTruck, Dixieland Diner Mobile Food Truck, Fantastic Hummus, La Empanada Food Truck, Local Yolk'l, Monsta Lobsta, Sushi & Seoul On The Roll, Treehouse Truck, SwedeDISH Food Truck, Tubby's Ice Cream, WakoTaco Food Truck and The Yum Yum Truck.
After tactfully checking out each truck (i.e. creeping), my sister and I decided to hit up La Empanada for a delightfully fried envelope of foodie folklore. We chose their special, which included three empanadas from their menu for $9.00. A savings of $1.50 - but I'm not here to talk money. Tonight, we went savory with BBQ Chicken, Picadillo Beef and Spinach & Feta (aka healthyish). There was also a sweet option of Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt that I WILL be returning for in the new future (so watch out, La Empanada Truck!) Each empanada had something special going on inside - the BBQ was sweet with chicken cooked to perfection; the Picadillo was light with bursts of sweetness from pleasantly surprising golden raisins; and the Spinach & Feta was a vegetarian's dream with a sprinkle of seasoning in a crisp pastry shell.
Winner: Picadillo, because I honestly wasn't expecting to like it as much as I actually did.
Our next stop was over to Monsta Lobsta for a Lobster Roll. I love Lobster Rolls and cannot resist. Monsta Lobsta's roll, in particular, was bursting with great flavor and a crazy amount of sweet lobster meat. No complaints here (not that anyone would listen). The price was great at $12.00 and they gave you more than enough, which is obviously amazing and great. I was trying to get photos of the food, but my impatiently hungry sister took a bite or three before I got the opportunity. I don't fight her when she's hungry, but I do post embarrassing photos. You're welcome, sis - let's hang out more.
Knowing that our eyes are usually much larger than our stomach, we went inside Spacebar to enjoy our foodie findings and a drink or three. Spacebar has a cool vibe and offers a variety of craft beer and cider. They also allow you to bring your own vinyl to play in the bar and will gift you with a free beer for participating. I don't have any vinyl records so I paid for my beer (Abita Purple Haze in case you were wondering). My sister enjoyed a heavily, gluten-free seasonal cider that she can't remember the name of, so you anti-glutenites should definitely get that. It was light and fruity, as cider usually is. It was also probably organic. Not judging, guessing.
After much consideration of going back for more, we decided moderation was key and that we'd be back again to try more Tasty Tuesday food truck options in the very, very near future. We did however meet up with some friends along the way who enjoyed Red Velvet Pancakes topped with cream cheese icing and chocolate chips, as well as an egg sandwich known as "The Glitzy" from Local Yolk'l. Another pal got a Viking Burger from SwedeDISH and paired it with nicely with Chocolate Ice Cream with M&M's from Tubby's Ice Cream. Everyone was quite satisfied... and full, so very full.
Overall, Tasty Tuesdays in the Milk District is a great place to chow down with friends and strangers (chock-full of cute dogs) from 6:30-10pm every Tuesday. Follow Tasty Tuesdays on Facebook for food truck line-ups each week. Be awesome and head on over to
